Link Building: The Hidden Truth

Link building is the lifeline of your web traffic. Actually, you need about 1000 links from other websites.1000 Links?? Yes, you need all those and more...and this really is the tricky bit I must say.

When it comes to links, we have inbound and outbound links. Inbound links are the ones from other people’s sites to yours and outbound links go from your site to another related site.

When you think of link building, it is very important that you first understand the underlying principles.

The internet is a web. Like a spider has its web. Each website is connected to another through a link.

You need to link only to RELEVANT websites. If you have a website on legal services, it would make good sense to link to The Kenya Law Reports Website because it enhances the readers experience and it positions your website favourably with the search engines.

The harder part is getting websites that are well recognised by Google to put your link on their website. There are many ways of getting these inbound links;

Link Exchange

If I have a travel related website and you have a hotel website, we can exchange links. This means that you put my link on your website and I put mine in yours. But how does Google view that type of link building?

Well, first it depends on the type of website that you are exchanging links with. Is it relevant? Does it have a high ranking on Google? Ideally, you want inbound links from website that perform better than yours.

Directories

You need a listing in the directories just the same way you would ordinarily list your physical business in the Yellow Pages.

The question is which directories and how do you submit your site to them. There are major directories such as Yahoo and DMOZ. These major directories are very valuable for your website promotion.

Some are paid directories and others are free. Yahoo is an important directory but you have to pay $299. This fee is not for inclusion, it is merely for submission. This essentially means that you only pay for your site to be reviewed. Other directories charge anything from $20-$100.

Before you embark in site submission, you will need to first set out a budget. This will help you in the deciding which directories to submit to and which ones to omit.

Blogging

If you don’t know what a blog is then don’t worry. I only discovered what that was a few years ago. A blog is an online mini journal. In it, you post new entries every so often, at least once a week.

I remember when I first discovered blogger.com. I was so thrilled at how simple it was to create a blog. I created my first blog and told everyone about it. I tried to post a new entry everyday, but I lost the battle sooner than I thought.

Within no time, I was bored stiff and to date I don’t even remember the password to access the blog now!

This is how blogging works; Identify blogs that are related to your website. Post comments on them and remember to put a link back to your website. Sounds easy doesn’t it? It’s just the commitment that lacks in most of us thus making it a tidious form of link building exercise.

Overtime however, I have learnt methods that are easier to use to build relevant inbound links and to build them real quick.

I have organised a seminar for June / July 2009 in Nairobi. Come and gather as much info as you can from us. I will show you how to build quality inbound links for your website. Please book your seat now because there are not many spaces left.

The seminar is only Ksh 9000 per person or Ksh 15,000 for two. Trust me, the worst thing you can do is to miss this seminar. Come and learn from an SEO expert.
